”The moment when you first wake up in the morning
is the most wonderful of the twenty-four hours.
No matter how weary or dreary you may feel,
you possess the certainty that,
during the day that lies before you,
absolutely anything may happen.
And the fact that it practically always doesn't,
matters not a jot.
The possibility is always there.”

Morning person or not, there comes a point in time everyday that you have to pick yourself up and get on with the day at hand. Do you ever have days where it seems like a struggle to muster the energy to get going? Do you feel any negative emotions about what’s in front of you for that day? What you do in the morning right after you wake up can be a very powerful catalyst for what lies ahead of you for the remainder of the day.
Each idea below has something in common – your attitude. You have sole control over your attitude every day. If you have nothing, and are stripped of all things you might deem of importance and relevance -– you still have the liberty and freedoms of your unique and self-influential attitude. I bet you’ve heard the timeless quote at some point -– “Attitudes are contagious, is yours worth catching?” Here are 5 things I enjoy doing in the mornings -– and you can do too if you need some positivity and an energy boost to make the most of your day.
5 Ways to Boost Your Mood in the Morning
- The Takeover
Know one thing, and know it with all of your being. YOU are in control of today. If you have something you need to get done, well by God there isn’t anything strong enough in this world to stop you. You’ll get creative, you’ll get resourceful, and most importantly you’ll get it done. Remind yourself of this simple fact each morning.
- Your Blood is Your Friend
Get your blood moving in the morning. You don’t have to workout for an hour, even if it’s some jumping jacks after you brush your teeth in the morning, do something to spark your pent up energy from your night of shut-eye.
- Simplification is Good
Have you ever noticed that what you tell yourself (or others) becomes reality? If you have to do something that is mentally stressing you – when you speak or think about how hard and difficult it is – how could it possibly be anything different? You’ll find that many people are more inclined to talk negatively when it comes to school, work, etc. Don’t get caught in that trap. Negativity complicates; positivity simplifies. Have perspective and leverage an approach of positive thinking from the get-go to reduce stress and breeze through daily events.
- One Thing and a Notecard
While I like to think I am organized and that I stick to my plans so I can reach my goals – we all know that we have days or weeks where life priorities simply slide off track. When you neglect your plan, you lose momentum and in effect, creativity. SO, in my case, a main focus and goal of mine is to grow my blog. I also have a full-time job and a start-up company on the side, and hence, time is often limited. I keep a stack of notecards next to my bed. Every morning, I randomly write down one thing I will do that day that contributes to the growth of my blog. I have found this to work very well for me –- it allows me to think outside of the box and often forces me to take action when I otherwise wouldn’t.
- Earth’s Natural Elixir
Drink a glass of water. If you are like me, you enjoy your coffee, juices, and anything flavored! Last year for about two months, I substituted water for coffee and I fell in love with drinking ice water in the morning. Nowadays, coffee definitely follows the water each morning, but I’d feel thirsty and depleted if I didn’t get my fill of water.

If we did a simple one-for-one trade up, I think we'd all feel better. I'm going to put this into practice. For each 6 oz. cup of tea or juice or [fill the blank] that I have, I will have one or two cups of nice, filtered water. Our muscles stay hydrated better and our brains function better and we eat less to boot!
Thanks for the GP Mike.
PS: Positively Present was quoted in Guideposts magazine. I'm probably months behind the times here, but I was surprised to see it when I was reading through. :)

Mornings are sometimes difficult for me, especially if I wake up feeling a bit tired. But remembering I'm in control always overcomes the laziness.

I completely agree with the glass of water thing. But, my personal favourite wake-me-up is a glass of water with lemon juice in it. Ok, it takes a little getting used to, especially if you normally drink sweet drinks, but I got the taste for it very quickly! It's got all the benefits of drinking water (great for waking up the mind and body), but with an extra cleansing sort of a zing!

Carrie - Thank you for your comment and for sharing your experience with amping yourself up in the morning! You really make a great point about the importance of water. (And thanks for the head's up on the Guidelines Magazine mention!)
Mike - You're welcome. It was a pleasure to feature your post on Positively Present. I'm glad you could be a part of the site!
Mark - So glad you liked Mike's advice. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
Rocky - Aren't those phrases great? When I read them, I knew this post was perfect for Positively Present!
Faizal - I know what you mean. I hate when I wake up exhausted and have a hard time getting my day started, but you've brought up an excellent point about being in control. No matter how lazy/tired we feel, we have the ability to choose positivity and action!
Topi - That sounds like a great wake-me-up drink. I'll have to give it a try! It definitely sounds like a very cleansing way to start off the day. :)

I totally agree about the water. I will have a cup of coffee sometimes, but never first thing in the morning. My body wants something clean and fresh in the a.m.!

that's a great post Dani :)
i would also add that thinking of this moment consciously would help us enjoy it more. some people think about worrying tasks as soon as they wake up

Michelle - Great point about putting something clean in your body first thing in the morning. That's the way to do it!
Mike - Thanks again for doing the post. It's great!
Farouk - I'm glad you enjoyed reading Mike's post. You've added a great point about being present when we first wake up. So many times, people get carried away thinking about all that they have to do that day. It's much better to take it one moment at time.

I like the idea of starting my day with a quick prayer. It sets the tone of the day. Most days I get down on my knees and pray for those I love, those sick and suffering and those with whom I have difficulty. I use the drive to work to meditate. Mornings are also for relaxing on the boat, taking it slow.

Syd - Sounds like you have a great way to start off your day. I like the idea of having a relaxing mourning routine!

"Your blood is your friend" ... I like that, and it's not just for vampires.

J.D. - Haha, I like that too. It's definitely not just for vampires and it's an important way to think about getting our body's moving in the morning.
