Really good post. Your suggestion for engaging others while not using "I, me or my" is a gem! I think this wonderful formula should be added to any listening skills development work.
Considering that most our mindsets are trained to look outside of our experience for happiness, this is a potent reminder about where and how we look - especially in relation to others.
We find this particularly true in the workplace, where so many people are really starved for genuine interest and recognition. When the focus is on you instead of me - I tend to SEE more, my vision gets bigger because my perspective has shifted.
Thx again for such an enlightened post,
Louise

I think a sense of humor goes a long way for rolling with the punches and turning situations around, or at least help lighten up the place.

Louise - I'm glad you enjoyed this Positively Present guest post! I agree that one of the greatest points made in the article was not using "I, me, or my" to engage others. It's a great tip! Thanks so much for leaving the comment -- I'm glad you enjoy this one!

J.D. - I agree that a sense of humor is so important and can make or break a lot of situations. Humor brings a great deal of joy into our lives!

The 'I, me my' exercise is perfect. I will use that starting today and will share it with the dozen salespeople I am training today. Ypou would be shocked to hear highly experienced salespeople approach a discussion solely from their perspective....what they want. Obviously, they might have more impact if they focus on the customer. I've preached this for a long time, but this is a great, succinct way to put it. Very helpful. Perfect timing for this great advice! Thank you.

Oh happy me... a post by my favourite author. It is easy to see why you should read his books. His writing is amazing and can be life altering.

H&W - I'm happy you liked that point that was brought up in this guest post. It really is a useful technique to follow and I can see how it would be particularly useful in sales. I'm so glad you'll be able to use this advice!

Frode - That's great to hear that you're already familiar with this author and his work. He definitely has some important insights to share!

It's unfortunate that we are oftentimes unaware of our own self-centeredness. I agree with the wisdom you have shared here. the truth is we will never know what we're missing until we extend ourselves to others. :-)

Walter - It is an unfortunate fact and can be particularly troublesome in those interested in personal development. I'm so glad you enjoyed this guest post!

Thank you for a great reminder. Moving past our ego and the power it holds takes constant vigilance. The good news is that with practice it can get easier to move the focus. Some excellent practices here for continuing that process - living in an other centered universe, a big step in personal and human development. If everyone could pull it off, Spaceship Earth would be in great shape!

Phil

This is soooo inspiring. I'm definitely going to make a conscious effort to do this, every day.

Phil - You're welcome! I'm glad I could share this guest post on Positively Present. It's amazing, when you really think about it, how our egos can dominate our lives and we don't usually give much thought to them. This post was a great reminder for me to pay attention to that aspect of my life.

Melissa - Isn't it? I'm glad you enjoyed the post! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
