According to The Toronto Star, "Neil Pasricha is the guru of small joys." I couldn't agree more. Neil is also the author of The Book of Awesome and, more recently, The Book of (Even More) Awesome. If you haven't read the first one, I'd highly recommend it. (You can check out my review here: 5 Benefits of Awesome.) Neil sent me copies of both books to review and both of them were truly inspiring. You can read about a lot of awesome things on his website, 1,000 Awesome Things, but there's something compelling about reading his books. They serve as such positive reminders that, in a world filled with a great deal of tragedy and pain, there really are some awesome things to be happy about. As Publisher's Weekly put it, "Pasricha emerges a committed but inviting optimist, combating life's unending stream of bad news by identifying opportunities to share a universal high-five with humanity."
I couldn't have said it better myself. Neil's latest book is a joy to read, both inspiring and at times laugh-out-loud funny. I found myself reading through it once and then going back again for quick pick-me-ups. After flipping through it many times, I decided to make my own personal list of awesome things and it was such a great exercise. I'd highly recommend trying it! And, if you don't feel up to that task or just want some inspiration, check out The Book of (Even More) Awesome. And if you want some free inspiration, check out the end of the post to learn how you can win a copy of the book!

When you start to think about it, life is pretty darn awesome. Before I started writing all of these things down, I wasn't in the best mood. I was tired, having woken inexplicably at 3am and been unable to fall back to sleep. I wasn't feeling well. I wasn't thrilled it was Sunday, which meant tomorrow would be the beginning of a busy work-filled week. But after writing all of these things down, I feel much differently now. I feel grateful. I feel happy. I feel like my life is filled with so many awesome things. And I bet yours is too...

The Book of (Even More) Awesome Things!
A name will be drawn at random on Wednesday, May 25, 2011
and announced on Thursday, May 26, 2011.

I would have to say that this is totally awesome! I will have to check out this book. That sounds like it would be good to have around.
I have recently experienced some unexpected good fortune in that the charms and pendants that I make, that were inspired after reading the book Four Word Self Help by Patti Digh, are really being embraced the world over. I just sent a package to Sweden, and tomorrow is my first package to Finland. I think that Google Translate is simply awesome, because I can type a short message in the language of my client!
Enjoy the day!

1.) Waking up smiling and realizing how comfortable you were as you slept. Like your bed has been hugging you. You're not hot, or cold, or contorted in any way. In that moment you are content, so comfortable and cozy in fact, you decide to sleep more.
2.) The great feeling you get when you look back at a child in your car, and he smiles back with a simple grin and squinty eyes from the wind and sun.
3.) Surprise birthday vacations to New York City.
4.) Hot, hot shower after a cold winter day, whether it is needed or not.
I didn't realize adding a comment would make me think of all the simple, awesome things I love about my life, so thank you :) (don't worry, these four aren't the only ones). Thank you for the contest, and I really love your site, it's been very inspiring to me. Looking forward to many more posts.

LIFE!!!
Posted by: Tricia | May 19, 2011 at 07:31 PM
Okay - I have a hard time with this. I've been more cynical than grateful in my life. So I cannot, right now, come up with 117 things, or 100 things, or even 10 things. I can give you TWO, though, that are at the forefront of my current experience:
1) The fragrance of the south in the springtime - honeysuckle is EVERYWHERE!
2) My neighbor's horse. I don't currently have a dog, but I can go back and visit him (as long as I bring some treats), and he will nuzzle me like a big, dangerously powerful, loving dog.
Posted by: Cara | May 19, 2011 at 08:48 PM
Some of my awesomes are:
a. Hearing my son talk (especially when he is in speech therapy) - his voice is that of an angel (he is 17 and started making word noises at the age of 13). The first time he called me MOM.... AWESOME!
b. When you teach a student something and you look in their eyes and can actually see that light bulb go off - that look of understanding.... It is hard to describe in words... AWESOME!
c. Waking up from a surgery and the moment that the nurse tells you "it is over - you did great! .... AWESOME!
d. Sitting down for the first time on a busy day to take a hot sip of fresh coffee... wowsa... AWESOME!
e. Looking at the first crocus bloom peeking out of some snow and grass after a looonnnngggg winter! Oh So AWESOME!!!!!
and last:
f. still sitting down every night to write 5 things I am thankful for... which helps me to be positive through 3 kids with autism, having cancer and a recent death of my baby brother.... It is all how I look at things...
not AWESOME for me - but AWESOME that I read that book Simple Abundance years ago and it taught me to do this... so I appreciate every day that I am here on this earth!
Thank you for this opportunity to share my Awesomisms....

Tricia - Great one! Life is pretty awesome!
Cara - I've spent a lot of my life being incredibly cynical so I know where you're coming from. It can be hard, when looking at the world through a cynical lens, to find anything that's really awesome. However, you've listed two really great ones. Honeysuckle is amazing (I just spotted some the other day!) and I used to ride horses so I always have a soft spot in my heart for them. Those are two very awesome things!
Sue and Danny - Those things are all SO awesome! Thank you for sharing your list. It's amazing to me that, despite the fact that some could see the negative in things like surgery, you've chosen to focus on the positive aspects. Very inspiring!
Dana - Wow! Those are all really great things. Cinnamon Toast Crunch is my favorite so I was particularly drawn to that one. I also just realized, after reading this, that I have a long weekend coming up due to a holiday. AWESOME!

Ashley - That is quite an awesome list! I love it! You've thought of so many awesome things to be grateful for in life. I particularly liked the one about the few days leading up to someone coming home from war. I've never experienced anything like that, but I imagine it must be an amazingly awesome feeling. Thanks for sharing your list!

Watching the passing panorama, sitting by the window on a train
The fragrance of rain-kissed earth
Catching up with an old friend, and sharing precious moments of rambunctious mirth
A hot cup of steamy, ginger tea on a winter afternoon
The colourful sights at a beach - vendors of trinkets, and eats, and balloons

Just reading your list made my day start to get better. I can't wait to work on a list of my own, maybe write one thing a day & celebrate that thing for the day.
I can't agree more with the wagging tails & running while a pet sleeps. It doesn't matter how horrible a day has felt to me, when I see that everything is so much better. Pets have an amazing thing about them that they can do just about anything to brighten your day.
