Hi There!

I came across your wonderful site, desperate and rather upset about my place in life at the mo.

I went straight to your post on being more open and immediately it hit a note with me. I need(ed) change.

Then I came across this very post and the question "are you who you want to be?" in the post pic made me smile as I realised someone was trying to tell me something.

Briefly, and because I am indeed trying to be more open :-) too, I'm a single parent who has gone through alot of hurt in the past and as a result, shut down emotionally. I've only really 'let in' my very best friend and my Mum. Everyone else really doesn't know me. It affects my relationships (inlcuding other family), friendships and even work, where I feel I'm looked upon as 'anti-social' not great for promotional opportunities I can tell you!

My son, on the other hand is just a bundle of social joy and acceptance :-) something that I admire and absolutely love about him, however, often makee me highly nervous in the playground at drop off/pick up. He would often put me in those 'Mum, can so-and-so come over to our house?' at which point I go completely stiff and look like a deer in headlights; playing a number of uncomfortable scenerios in me head: having to actually talk to the parent, having them come to my home; actually opening the door to a 'stranger'. I would always try and arrange activities for my son that didn't involve me having to properly open up to others i.e. football club, Parkour club, skateboarding. The fear was crippling me and my son's existence; extremely suffocating. Finally, after another, 'Mum...?' moment, I decided I needed to do something about this. So here I am, taking in all your wonderful advice and finally making a change.

Also, you'll be pleased to know, that as I write this, we are preparing to meet up with my son's friend from school and his mother and are taking the boys swimming so we can chat and get to know eachother. Feel a little sick, but it's the fear trying to creep through. Going to blow past it and try and actually have some fun.

So thank you for being real and open.
x

JR and Athena - Awesome answers! I'm so glad you took the time to respond to the questions.

Titch - Thanks for your comment. I'm glad you found Positively Present, though I'm sorry to hear you're going through a tough time. It sounds like you're making progress though! For some people it can be very difficult to be social and open with others; you're not alone in how you feel. However, one thing that's really helped me become a more positive person is going to a great therapist. She helped me to deal with some of my issues - the ones I didn't want to share with anyone - and that might help you out too. Sometimes it's really useful to have an outside opinion! I'm happy to hear that you're opening up a bit and going to meet your son's friend and his mother. I hope it went well!
